とてつもなく高価なブランド品を買う人たち。その一方で、 260円の牛丼や 160円のハンバーガーにおなじ人たちが群がっています。そうした とても安い食事を提供するお店のテーブルに、ルイ・ヴィトンのバッグが載っていることを誰も奇妙だと思わないのでしょうか？「一点豪華主義」という豪華なのか貧しいのかわからない標語が現われてもいます。

この状態を簡単に言い換えてしまうと、消費者の側における判断停止を原因とする両極端化です。消費者の側に商品価値に対する判断能力が無いため、「ブランド」であるとか「価格」という非常にわかりやすい記号のみに反応する消費行動が作られてしまっているのです。洋服にしても食事にしても、ある品質の物に対して、どのくらいの金額を支払うべきかという判断が、私たちの「値ごろ感」をつくります。品質が高いならば、それなりの金額を支払い、またその商品を選択するでしょう。品質が低いなら、もう二度とその物に対してお金を払おうと思わないでしょう。
