こうした判断が可能になるためには、消費者の側に商品に対する知識・評価基準などが備わっている必要があります。例えばスーツについて考えてみてください。この論文を読んでいる皆さんは、値札のついていないスーツを着せられて、そのスーツの値段を推測することができるでしょうか？そのスーツの値段を測るためには、生地の品質、仕立ての良し悪し、細部の仕事の丁寧さなどを測る必要があります。これは、実はとても大変な知識と感性を必要とする作業です。スーツに限らず、あらゆる商品について、このことは妥当します。

もし、消費者の側に、この「値ごろ感」が形成できない場合、どのような行動をとるか考えれば、二極化の原因はすぐに分かるはずです。自分のとくにこだわりをもつ商品については、とにかく「最高の品質」をもつと考えられる商品を選ぶはずです。そこで、自分の知識の範囲で「最高の品質」を提供していると考えるブランドを信奉するわけです。一方、こだわりのない商品については、とにかく「最低の価格」をもつ商品を選ぶはずです。なぜなら、商品として成立している品質を備えている以上、価格が最低であれば少なくとも「損をしていない」と安心できるからです。このように二極化の原因は、消費者の商品に対する見識が著しく低下していることが理由なのです。
