当然、現在の消費者が怠慢である、というわけではありません。私たちが、すべての商品について「目利き」になることは不可能です。そうした場合、従来では「商店」あるいは「店主」、もっと一般的に言えば「暖簾」を信じてきたわけです。経験的に、あるいは地域的な伝統として、「この店はインチキな商売はしない」「この店は、この程度以下の品質のものを置かない」といった信用を測ることで、商品の品質を測る代わりをしていたわけです。そういう意味では、商店というのは、客の代理人として商品知識をたくわえ、商品の選別を行っていたわけですから、どんな業種の商店であっても情報サービス業の一種であったと見ることができます。

この機能を怠った商店は、「あらゆる商品を置いている」ことを価値とする大規模スーパー等に勝ち得ません。逆に大規模スーパーは、商品の選別努力を削減し、客自身に選択させるという戦略を取ったわけです。そのために、大規模スーパーは商店としての「個性」を失いました。その結果、価格競争に陥らざる得ないわけで、その行き着く先が100円ショップだったといえるでしょう。コンビニに到っては、顧客の消費行動を分析することで、どのような商品を置くかを決定しているのですから、先に述べたように「価値のある商品を選別する」という意味での商店ではないのです。それは、「客が買う→仕入れる」という関係が「仕入れる→客が買う」という関係の裏返しではないか、という逆説から逃れることができません。
